Emballage is a performance project by Aletia Upstairs (Aletia Badenhorst) from a Practice as Research PhD that looks at imaginatively reworking several aspects of the Richard Demarco Archive.
Emballage refers to Tadeusz Kantor’s concept of wrapping, a utilitarian action taken from the most mundane reality of everyday life. Apart from Kantor (The Water Hen, Lovelies and Dowdies, The Dead Class) the performance also takes inspiration from other practitioners and stimuli in the Richard Demarco archive, such as Joseph Beuys (7000 Oaks), Marina Abramovic (Rhythm 10), Rose Finn-Kelcey (The Visitation), Bobby Baker (Cook Dems), Shakespeare’s Macbeth text (thrice produced by Demarco on Inchcolm Island) as well as autobiographical, archival narratives from the performers.
